Do they typically beef up the motors on the armored cars over there or do you just suffer an acceleration penalty for the protection? I would ask about the suspension as well but I assume that's almost necessary given the extra weight, right?

Nope they don't, just the ones that are factory armored (BMW Protection/Security, Merc Guard). The aftermarket ones (95%) have nothing done to them, new armoring is only 90 kilos or so, basically a constant second passenger.

Ah, the 605. Proof that while you can in fact polish a turd if you throw enough money at it, that doesn't mean anyone will want to buy it.

I love this kind of ludicrous French 'luxury' barge, and sometimes find myself thinking of buying one secondhand for next to nothing - but I always wonder who on earth bought them new.

Ok that's much less than I was expecting. Makes sense though. I guess I thought that because I'd only read about the higher levels of armoring which, if I remember your previous posts correctly, don't get installed on regular civilian vehicles.

Why polish a turd? There was nothing really wrong with it when it was new.

I was referring to the design process, not the armour upgrade.

But that is new armoring, with kevlar and modern things I don't really understand. The old S500 and 7 Series are VERY HEAVY, they eat suspension bits, and window motors and door hinges.

Well, then, depends what you mean by nothing wrong with it. I'm pretty sure it's as TG said, and the design brief was 'let's build the worst luxury car in the world '. It's this wonderful, almost Soviet combination of lashings of not-quite-luxury on top of a truly awful platform.
